Nail polish removers come in a couple of types, and each have their good and bad points, so it’s worth having a think about which option is going to work best. Many brands of remover now contain Vitamin E, aloe vera and other moisturizing ingredients, and these will, over time, greatly improve your nail quality, so are worth considering. The other decision is whether to use a chemical based remover, or not.

Still, there are a few possible challenges. If you’re using gel nails or nail glue, you will need the right nail polish remover that you can really soak your nails into.

Acetone based remover:

This is the most common and cheapest type of remover and is very effective at taking off polish quickly and easily, especially the darker colors. However, it can dry out both nails and cuticles, causing splitting, peeling and soreness.

Acetone removers should be used with care around acrylic nails; as it is frequently employed to loosen and detach these, taking polish off with it can accidentally damage the artificial nail.

Acetone free remover:

This contains no harsh chemicals and is ideal for acrylic and natural nails alike, leaving them feeling nourished and healthy. However, it is more expensive and takes effort to remove the polish, especially darker colors.

What Makes It Great

I tried this acetone remover with several nail finishes – gel, dip powders and a whole variety of polishes, and it worked consistently well each time. I used soaking and just wiping with cotton wool balls as removal methods and was super happy with the results!

Where It Could Be Improved

I really liked the fact that the manufacturer included a free hard wearing nail file with this – very thoughtful and useful. It arrived promptly and well wrapped. Our only worry is that it didn’t come with a removable foil seal, so that when we opened the bottle, I almost spilt it everywhere. That could definitely be improved upon.

What Makes It Great

Despite containing acetone, this quick acting remover left my nails feeling smooth and healthy, even though I change my polish almost daily. It doesn’t have that chemical smell associated with polish removers, either.

The bottle was slightly grippy, and this, coupled with the locking lid and dispenser, meant that there was no risk of spillages.

Where It Could Be Improved

The price is a little high for a polish remover but for me, it’s worth it.

What Makes It Great

This sweet nail polish remover from Sally Hansen ticks all the boxes. It gives consistently good results, and I was very impressed with its performance. Quickly removing every last trace of the polishes I tried it on, it left my nails feeling super smooth and moist.

What a fantastic idea!

Highrock have come up with reusable clips for soaking off polish – a non-messy, time friendly solution. The clips fitted my fingers well, even my friend’s male fingers – don’t ask, and were comfortable. They look very durable and well made.

These clips halve the time to soak off polish, are inexpensive, simple to use and last really well. I’ve used them multiple times, and they still have plenty of life left. These are fab!

Where It Could Be Improved

To be honest, they do work slower than a traditional acetone soaked cotton pad, but I love them and the only thing that I take issue with is why they weren’t available before!
