One of the three primary colors, alongside red and yellow, blue is traditionally the color of calm. Running through from the palest baby blue to the deepest, darkest ultramarine, blue is the color of your favorite jeans, the sky on a clear day or the welcoming grin of Facebook – unless, like me, you’ve personalized your social media account. Come on, it’s too tempting not to!
Producing positive effects on the mind, blue encourages restful feelings, and can slow the metabolism, causing it to release chemicals that increase calmness, peace and tranquility. It’s also useful to know that if you are dieting – and let’s face it, who isn’t, the color blue can act as an appetite suppressant.
When worn, blue suggests trustworthiness, loyalty, and sincerity, along with a rich imagination and an expansive intuition. Obviously, I am all of those things, so it’s about time I picked my top three favorite blue nail polishes.
1) OPI Nail Polish – No Room for the Blues
What Makes it Great
With hints of both baby and cobalt, this mid-range blue complements a whole wardrobe of outfits, sitting comfortably alongside any shade. It possesses an unusual depth and, as such, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where this blue fits on the color wheel. Although not glittery, it does change tonal quality depending on the angle, offering a multitude of nail art options. Under two coats of my usual gloss, this polish lasted well into two weeks.
Where it Could be Improved
The first application turned out a little streaky, but after a second coat, it was perfect.

2) ZOYA Nail Polish – Sailor
What Makes it Great
Well, it’s not hard to guess where this polish got its name. The color of the sea on a bright summer’s day, this rich blue feels comfortably soft, like a careworn pair of much loved jeans. You know the ones – you’ll never throw them despite the slight grass stain or oil mark, they fit perfectly and pulling them on is like coming home. Like those old familiar jeans, this polish lasts forever, and it was nearly three weeks before I had to remove it.
Where it Could be Improved
Make sure you use this with a base coat as it can leave a slight stain on your natural nail bed.
3) ILNP Holographic Nail Polish – Aria
What Makes it Great
Stepping away from the softer blues, this one is in-your-face sparkly! Bold, bright and uber chic, ILNP’s Aria spangles and twinkles from every angle. Crammed full of minuscule particles that together form a galaxy of stars, this rich deep polish offers the briefest, prettiest glimpses of pink, violet and silver, and thankfully lasted ages before it chipped – almost three full weeks!
Where it Could be Improved
Like many holographic polishes, the odor was quite strong, although with an open window, it soon went.
