Duskier than burgundy, and not as lively as red, maroon is named after the French for chestnuts, and it can appear as rich and dark as the deepest shades on a chestnut casing. Representing a passionate intensity, maroon evokes feelings of chilly autumn nights spent in front of a roaring fire, roasting a harvest of sweet-smelling chestnuts.
Maroon encourages confidence, creativity, and strength, and is associated with courage and endless beauty. Choosing to wear maroon nail polish suggests you have hidden depths, a wealth of knowledge, and possess exquisite style and grace – not sure why I’m wearing it, then!
But, nevertheless, here’s my top three maroon nail polishes.
1) essie Nail Polish – Wicked
What Makes it Great
So deep it’s almost black, Wicked is boldly sinister, whilst at the same time gloriously delicious. Although it benefits from several applications of a good quality top coat, the shine it possesses is high enough to forego any more layers. However, I tested this polish in exactly the same way I test them all – with two top coats. It lasted a good while and remained chip free for over two weeks.
Where it Could be Improved
The polish was a little thick initially, but after a couple of drops of acetone remover, it loosened up and went on smoothly.

2) OPI Nail Polish – Midnight in Moscow
What Makes it Great
Decidedly dark, this almost inky black polish hints at maroon, and caught in the light, the deep reddish brown leaps out surprisingly. Soft and richly glamorous, this is a polish for sleek after dark parties, for hidden secrets whispered in corners, and for never, ever kissing and telling. With compliments galore, it was a real shame to take it off on day 18 when the first chip appeared.
Where it Could be Improved
To prevent staining, a base coat should be applied.

3) 786 Cosmetics Nail Polish – Istanbul
What Makes it Great
786 Cosmetics polishes are vegan, non-toxic, cruelty-free, and of very high quality. Istanbul, inspired by the decadent colors and architecture of this ancient city, echoes the deepest red spices found in the bazaar’s that line its narrow, cobbled lanes. You can almost feel the heat and magic of the region. It was over two weeks before I reluctantly had to remove it.
Where it Could be Improved
Although 786 claim it’s odor-free, I thought the smell quite strong; however, nothing that an open window couldn’t sort.
