With mornings getting cooler, leaves turning golden, and dew sparkling on the grass as we leave for work, there is no denying it – fall is on its way. Time for pumpkin spiced lattes, toasting s’mores, and getting excited about Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Fall fashion this year is all about creamy caramel and butterscotch colors, mixed with warm, rich hazels, plush purples and flattering dark pinks, with catwalks full of texture. Ribbed woollens from Gucci contrast against Saint Laurent’s structured silhouettes and gabardine mini-dresses, but the highlight for me was Dries Van Noten’s faux fur wrap. Shimmering in firey lava orange, I fell in love. Although it may take a lot of manicures to be able to treat myself – manicures plus selling my car, my house and my kids, but boy, it was gorgeous.

Nail fashions are following the fall color trends, both in high gloss and, growing in popularity, matte, with classic creams, chestnuts, and twinkling golds. Combine your gorgeous fall manicure with the perfect stylish coat in fall colors – and you are ready for almost any occasion.

I’ve had fun trying out this season’s latest polish collections and here’s my pick of the best.

1) Beetles Gel Polish 6 Fall Colors

What Makes it Great
Beetles have successfully captured the fall colors, with deep butterscotch, warm fall reds and browns, and a gloriously shimmering gold. Non toxic, low odor, and easy to apply, these are perfect for either gloss or matte top coats. Taking an average from this collection, the length of time before my nails developed a chip was almost three weeks.

Where it Could be Improved
A couple of the bottles contained gloopy polish, but with a couple of drops of remover, they soon loosened up.

2) Modelones Gel Nail Polish Set

What Makes it Great
Modelones’s environmentally friendly polishes are gloriously high gloss, and the collection includes rich reds, a gorgeous fall russet and a lovely muted green that garnered lots of compliments when I wore it out. The average time between manicures was 16 days.

Where it Could be Improved
Advertized as low odor, the smell was actually quite strong, although an open window soon sorted that.

3) Lavender Violets Nail Gel Polish Kit UV LED

What Makes it Great
This non-toxic collection contains shades that sum up the warm spiciness of fall – rich plum, midnight blue, and a couple of high shine glitter-effect polishes. They lasted, on average, 20 days, before I had to remove them.

Where it Could be Improved
The bottles are smaller than usual, but I only needed one coat per nail.

4) Saviland Red Series Gel Nail Polish Set

What Makes it Great
Saviland aren’t a brand I’m very familiar with, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The choice of shades is well-considered with a wide range of gorgeously smooth rich reds, from pearly pink through to a delicious merlot. I was impressed to find that, on average, they lasted over two weeks before chipping, and unlike some bigger brands, they took very little effort to remove.

Where it Could be Improved
To achieve the finish I was after, I had to apply two coats.

5) SinfulColors Nail Polish Collection 6 Colors

What Makes it Great
SinfulColors has bucked the warm fall colors trend and gone all out for all-singing-and-dancing sparkles. However, they still possess a feeling of seasonal change with a shimmery chestnut, deep holly green and a sumptuous midnight blue. There isn’t a color here that I didn’t receive compliments for, and I was sad when after an average of 16 days, I had to remove them.

As an added bonus, the set includes a pot of subtle rainbow shimmer face powder!

Where it Could be Improved
The darker colors required two layers to give a smooth, streak-free finish.
