Top 3 Baby Nail Clippers for New Mamas – Pain and Tears-Free Nail Clipping Experience

Babies are so tiny, precious and cute, but oh boy, do their nails scratch? They seem to develop talons in the womb, ready to take on even the biggest clawed beastie, but instead they scratch momma’s face, arms, face again and anywhere else they can get to, not to mention injuring their own delicate skin. However, cutting those claws can seem a daunting prospect – what if you slip and slice baby’s finger off? What if you cut too close and baby bleeds everywhere, developing not only a phobia to clippers but a long-lasting hatred of you? Nope, not gonna happen – you’ve got this.

Sneak up on baby when he/she is sleepy, or just fresh from the bath when the nails are a little softer. Go on, you might as well start now as you’ll be doing this at least once a week – baby’s nails grow super fast.

Ensure you have plenty of light, and, using clippers designed for babies nails, hold his/her hand firmly. Press the pad of the finger away from the nail to avoid accidentally nicking the soft skin. Trim the nails in a curve that matches the finger, but cut toenails straight across, and if you need to file, only use the mildest emery board, and go very gently.

And … breathe …

And if all else fails – just slip on a pair of cozy mittens on your baby’s cute little hands to stop those nails from leaving scratches over everyone’s faces – baby will be warm and you will be scratch-free! Good news is, you can find mittens in various designs so not only will they be protecting your baby from scratches, but will also be looking really adorable on your little munchkin.

I’ve enlisted all my friends and their babies to test out the best selling baby nail clippers, and here are the results.

1) Fridababy The SnipperClipper Set

What Makes it Great

This is a really thoughtfully designed set. The clippers incorporate a ‘spyhole’ allowing you to see exactly where you’re cutting, a curved cutting edge and silent action. It also includes an S shaped file to gently smooth baby’s nails. In tests, we found they worked really well, and the file is the perfect shape for tiny nails.

Where it Could be Improved

The spyhole is great, but takes a bit of practice to use. Try it out on yourself first.

The Final Verdict

From newborns to toddlers, this set is really nicely designed and very gentle for tiny nails.

2) Safety 1st Steady Grip Infant Nail Clipper

What Makes it Great

Easy to hold and maneuver, this nail clipper provides plenty of grip, perfect for weeny nails. Although small in the first place, these clippers fold up even smaller for jam-packed diaper bags. In our tests, these gave a smooth, easy cut, and felt nice and secure to hold.

Where it Could be Improved

It would be nice to be able to choose the color, instead of taking pot luck .

The Final Verdict

Super grippy clippers means there’s no risk of slipping and hurting baby. A must-have for new parents everywhere.

3) The First Years Deluxe Nail Clipper

What Makes it Great

Complete with a removable x4 magnifier, and ergonomic sure-grip shape, this well made set of baby nail clippers is licensed by the American Red Cross. The magnifier is a super idea and makes nail cutting simple and risk free. This clipper performed nicely once we were used to using the magnifier.

Where it Could be Improved

Practice using these on your nails first as the magnifier makes them a little awkward initially.
